On Friday, Eduardo and I both took the day off so we could all travel to Santa Marta, a city approximately 4.5 hours away. Santa Marta is the gateway to one of Colombia’s most popular national parks, Tayrona Park. In the park we will hike a couple hours to some beaches where we will spend the day swimming and hopefully soaking up some sun.

We left the apartment around 7am and caught a cab to a local bus company. We got there way too early for our 8am departure so we waited in the “terminal”.

The journey was fairly uneventful. There was a 10 min stop in the city of Barranquilla, which is about halfway to Santa Marta, to drop off a couple people and a washroom break.
We got into Santa Marta around 12:30pm and headed to lunch. Eduardo had been browsing the internet on our way and found an interesting place that served various Arepa’s (which is the grilled cornmeal cakes with meat and cheese fillings). They were quite good. Eduardo and Owen had the octopus arepas while Jennifer and I were a little less bold with the chicken. The meal started with a bowl of soup, either beet or squash. And we all had mojitos…Lulo fruit and Tamarind flavoured.
