Good-Bye Santorini

Finally, after getting back to the bus station, we made our way to the cable car that would take us down the cliff side to our tender boat to get back the ship. The cable car consisted of 6 cars holding, 6 people per car, to take us down the very steep 600 meter cliff to the old port. Once at the bottom, we found our tender and headed home. We made it just in time...

Bus Ride Back to Fira

After lunch, we made our way back the opposite direction and took a few more photos along the way. We caught our bus back to Fira at the end of walk by hailing it from the side of the road, like a local! Interesting story about the bus ride back. About half way back, the cuts across the other traffic lane into a gas station. The driver pulled up to the pump, walked...

Lunch – Santorini

It was now around 3pm and we were getting hungry so we found a little spot on the side of the cliff and had some chicken souvlaki, seen above. The photo of the view was what was in front of us while we ate.

Oia

Since we had the time, we chose to catch the local bus to the neighbouring village of Oia (pronounced “ee-ya”). €1.80 each and 20 minutes later, we had survived the hairpin turns and the several hundred meter cliff drops that our Greyhound-style city bus made in getting us there. Oia was even more spectacular than Fira. So many white washed building built...

Fish Spa

One shop we found in Fira was the Fish Spa. The idea is you dangle your bare feet in a large bucket of water and let the 40-50 small fish eat the dead skin from your feet and in between your toes. I have no idea how to describe the sensation. It was a little ticklish at first but then turned to gentle nibbling of your toes, heels and ankles. It was €10 for 15 minutes...

Fira

The last stop on the tour was a walk to another church and an amazing view of the caldera. From here we could see our ship along with the 3 others in town that day. Left on our own and still 6 hours before we had to board the ship again, we meandered our way through the narrow streets of Fira. It’s a pretty touristy area but the views of the architecture and...

Views from the Castle

Heading back to the main town of Fira, we stopped at the Venetian Castle. From the top of the castle, it gave speculate views of cliff side villages that line Santorini. This is also where we saw our first church with a blue roof. There are over 500 churches in Santorini, an island of only 15,000 people. We also saw our first Santorini vineyard up close. The grape...

Akortiri

Today we arrived in Santorini! The volcanic cliffs of Santorini are red, brown or greenish, surrounded by a string of white villages. Being the last of the Cyclades islands, Santorini is the main island In a complex of five. It was an early 7:15am start to meet up for our organized tour of the Akrotiri ruins in the south west area of Santorini. There are no docks in...
